TAEC invests 3bn/- for laboratory equipment
MWANZA: TANZANIA Atomic Energy Commission (TAEC) has invested approximately 3bn/- in the procurement of various laboratory equipment, a move aimed at enhancing its capacity to conduct tests, inspections, and research related to the safe use of nuclear technology in the country.
TAEC’s Director of Technology and Technical Services, Dr. Remigius Kawala, said that this investment is part of the Commission’s efforts to boost its ability to deliver professional services with accuracy and in compliance with accepted standards.
Dr Kawala made these remarks today in Mwanza during a training session designed to build the capacity of TAEC experts in the operation, maintenance, and care of equipment used to detect radiation at various points of entry and exit across the country.
He noted that the training is crucial for ensuring that the equipment installed at strategic border locations operates efficiently and is properly maintained at all times.
“This equipment is used to help detect the presence of radioactive or nuclear materials that might be imported into or transported through the country without adhering to the required procedures. ” he said.
Separately, Dr. Kawala stated that TAEC is in the final stages of obtaining the necessary accreditations for its large, state-of-the-art laboratory located in Arusha. He stated that the completion of the process would enhance the laboratory’s capacity to provide testing and diagnostic services in accordance with recognized standards.
For his part, TAEC’s Head of Communications, Mr Peter Ngamilo, stated that alongside investments in equipment and capacity building for experts, the Commission will continue to educate the public on the importance of the safe use of radiation and nuclear technology.

“It is important for citizens to understand that nuclear technology has many beneficial applications in our lives. Our role is to ensure these applications are carried out safely, while also ensuring the public receives accurate information about TAEC’s work in protecting them and the environment from potential hazards associated with the unsafe use of radiation,”Mr Ngamilo said.
He noted that the presence of radiation detection equipment at border points is a crucial component of the safety and security system, as it helps ensure that radioactive materials entering or leaving the country are identified and handled in accordance with established procedures.
Mr Ngamilo added that the Government continues to create an enabling environment for public institutions and the private sector to collaborate on the use of nuclear technology for peaceful and developmental purposes, thereby extending the technology’s benefits to a wider segment of the population.
