3,000 residents benefit from Ukonga medical camp

DAR ES SALAAM: MORE than 3,000 residents and pupils from five primary schools in Ukonga have received free health screening, treatment and health education through a medical camp organised by the Rotary Club of Dar es Salaam Oyster Bay in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Ukonga.

The Ukonga Medical Camp 2026, held recently at Mzambarauni Primary School, brought essential healthcare services closer to communities, particularly children who face challenges accessing medical facilities.

Pupils from Mzambarauni, Amani, Ukonga, Ukonga JICA and Juhudi primary schools received malaria screening and treatment, eye checks, oral and dental health services, dental hygiene kits and menstrual health education. The camp also offered screening and treatment for non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Rotary Club of Dar es Salaam President Mr Paul Muhato said the initiative reflected the organisation’s commitment to extending healthcare services to underserved communities.

He said the club also distributed 2,064 cartons of disposable sanitary pads and 78 packs of reusable sanitary pads to girls and women to promote menstrual health and hygiene.

“The provision of dental hygiene kits is intended to help pupils maintain good oral health, while malaria, eye and NCD services will help address health problems that could affect their school attendance and academic performance,” he said.

Rotary Club of Dar es Salaam Director of Service Projects Mr Gaspar Ojoro said the camp builds on previous outreach programmes that encouraged the club to continue bringing healthcare services closer to communities in need.

Mzambarauni Primary School Head Teacher Mr Magnus Kayombo said the partnership had strengthened children’s health by providing a wide range of medical services and recalled the club’s previous support for pupils with hearing challenges and girls’ welfare.

Ukonga Councillor Mr Ramadhani Bendera said the initiative had helped residents and pupils’ access free medical screening and medicines.
