Teachers urged to embrace AI in classrooms

MOSHI: TEACHERS should integrate artificial intelligence (AI) and other digital tools into classroom teaching to help students develop skills needed in an increasingly digital economy, education experts have said.

The call was made during the 2026 Teaching and Learning with Digital Resources in Serving Training workshop in Moshi, where teachers from schools and higher learning institutions were trained on using technology to improve teaching and learning.

One of the facilitators, Prof Karl Fleischmann, said digital literacy has become essential as technology continues to transform education, business and everyday life.

“In a country with strong investment potential, IT plays a crucial role in modern society, transforming the way we live, work and interact. That is why people must acquire digital literacy,” Prof Fleischmann said.

He said teachers must continue updating their digital skills to keep pace with technological changes and improve the quality of classroom instruction.

“Teachers need to keep up with technological developments, use effective teaching methods and discover new ways to engage and motivate students,” he said.

Prof Fleischmann said AI was given a prominent place in the training, with teachers learning how to use the technology and other digital tools to search for information, prepare lessons, develop teaching materials and engage students more effectively.

He said the workshop also addressed challenges facing schools with limited computer facilities, noting that smartphones can serve as practical learning tools for both teachers and students.

The training covered six academic areas: English, Biology, Mathematics, Textile Design, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Open and Blended Learning. Stefano Moshi Memorial University College (SMMUCo) Provost, Prof Andrew Mmbwambo, said digital literacy is essential for teachers to meet professional standards, engage diverse learners and integrate culturally relevant digital media into teaching.

“Proficiency with modern IT tools enables educators to respond to remote and hybrid learning needs while fostering safe online learning communities,” Prof Mmbwambo said.

He added that the training would help participants strengthen 21st-century teaching skills, promote personalised learning and build collaborative professional cultures through the effective use of digital technology.
