DAR ES SALAAM: PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has held talks with the President of the African Diaspora Development Institute (ADDI), Ambassador Arikana Chihombori-Quao, focusing on strengthening cooperation between Tanzania, the institution and the African diaspora to advance the continent’s development.

According to a statement released by the Director of Presidential Communications, Bakari Machumu, during the talks held today, August 24, 2026,  at State House in Dar es Salaam, both sides discussed ways of harnessing the potential of the African diaspora to support investment, knowledge exchange and development initiatives across the continent.

Speaking at the meeting, Tanzania’s Head of State underscored the importance of equipping young Africans with a deeper understanding of the continent’s history, their role in development and the political and economic changes shaping the global landscape.

According to President Samia, youth needed the knowledge and skills to navigate the rapidly changing world and make meaningful contributions to the development of their countries and Africa as a whole.

“There is a need for young Africans to be instilled with patriotism and strengthen their understanding of civic responsibility, leadership and participation in community and national development,” she stated.

Additionally, President Samia highlighted the importance of media literacy, particularly in helping young people understand and critically engage with information as they participate in social, political and economic affairs.

Moreover, she stated that women also have a critical role to play in Africa’s development, particularly through raising families, building communities and providing leadership at different levels of society noting that women remain important custodians of African culture and indigenous knowledge, which should be preserved and passed on to younger generations.

The discussions also explored opportunities for closer collaboration between Tanzania, ADDI and Africans living in the diaspora in mobilising resources and expertise for development.

Ambassador Chihombori-Quao commended President Samia for her leadership and Tanzania’s continued progress in various areas of development.

She said stronger cooperation between African countries and the diaspora could help mobilise investment, facilitate the exchange of knowledge and expertise, and create new opportunities for the continent’s transformation.

The ADDI President also emphasised the importance of promoting a more accurate and positive narrative about Africa, highlighting the continent’s potential, achievements and opportunities rather than focusing solely on its challenges.

President Samia, in turn, commended Ambassador Chihombori-Quao for her longstanding advocacy for African interests and her efforts to strengthen relations between Africa and the global African diaspora.

The meeting comes at a time when African countries are seeking to deepen engagement with their diaspora communities as potential partners in investment, skills transfer, innovation and development.
