When illness threatens learning, health insurance gives Namtumbo students chance to stay focused
RUVUMA: ACCESS to reliable healthcare can shape a child’s ability to attend school consistently, concentrate in class and pursue future opportunities.
In Namtumbo District, Ruvuma Region, 1,000 students have received health insurance coverage through a contribution of more than 50m/- from MANTRA Tanzania Ltd, a company engaged in uranium mining and processing.
The initiative is part of the company’s corporate social responsibility strategy, which supports communities surrounding its operations.
Health is one of MANTRA’s priorities, alongside water, education, sports and other community development programmes.
The support is intended to help learners stay healthy, focused and better prepared to complete their education.
The decision to support students through health insurance reflects a practical understanding that illness can interrupt education and place unexpected financial pressure on families.
For many households, medical expenses can become a serious burden when treatment is needed without warning. By helping students access healthcare, the initiative seeks to reduce that burden and give learners greater peace of mind.
It also supports parents and guardians, who can have greater confidence that their children can receive medical attention when required. In turn, students are better positioned to remain in school and pursue their studies with fewer health-related disruptions and concerns daily.
Speaking to journalists at the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) Ruvuma Regional Office, MANTRA Tanzania Ltd Public Relations Officer Yohanis Kilave said the company considered it important to work with the National Health Insurance Fund to ensure students could access healthcare without carrying the burden of medical costs.
He said the company hoped the coverage would allow beneficiaries to concentrate on their studies, improve their performance and develop skills that could contribute to their communities and country.
Mr Kilave described the exercise as demanding, but praised NHIF staff for working hard, completing the process on time and providing support whenever challenges arose during implementation.
On behalf of MANTRA Tanzania Ltd and its Managing Director, Kilave thanked NHIF leadership, including the Director General, Ruvuma Regional Manager and other employees, for their commitment and cooperation.
He said the company viewed health insurance as an investment in the future of young people and the wider community. Healthy learners are more likely to attend school consistently, concentrate in class and develop skills needed to contribute positively to society.
He added that supporting students through insurance could help strengthen their confidence and reduce anxiety when illness or injury required medical attention. The intended benefit therefore extends beyond treatment alone.
For his part, NHIF Ruvuma Regional Manager Hansi John said the Fund has a responsibility to ensure that residents of Ruvuma and Tanzanians across the country have reliable access to medical treatment.
NHIF serves public servants, private-sector employees and large groups of farmers through Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Societies, including coffee, tobacco and maize farmers.
He said children, including students, can be covered through the Toto Afya Kadi health insurance scheme, which costs 50,400/- per year.
He explained that health insurance provides an important financial safety net when unexpected illness occurs and can help families avoid paying treatment costs directly immediately.
Hansi said the government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan is committed to expanding health insurance so Tanzanians can access medical treatment without depending entirely on cash payments.
He noted that illness can occur unexpectedly and may require immediate attention, making insurance especially important for families with limited resources.
He thanked MANTRA for sponsoring coverage for the 1,000 students and called on other companies to follow the example by supporting communities around their operations.
He said such contributions can strengthen cooperation between businesses and public institutions while advancing wider efforts to increase health insurance coverage and improve access to healthcare.
The contribution therefore extends beyond a financial donation. It represents an investment in human capital because healthier children are better placed to attend school, learn effectively and develop skills for future participation in society.
Health coverage can also protect families from unexpected medical costs that might otherwise force them to divert money from food, education or other essential needs.
For students, knowing that medical support is available can reduce fear and help them focus on their studies. In this sense, the initiative connects health, education and community development rather than treating healthcare as a separate concern from learning and opportunity.
The initiative also highlights the role companies can play when they work with public institutions to address community needs.
MANTRA’s support is aligned with its broader CSR priorities, which include health, water, education, sports and other development activities around its operations.
Such cooperation can help ensure that communities benefit from economic activities taking place in their areas.
It also creates opportunities for businesses and public agencies to combine resources, expertise and institutional capacity to address practical challenges.
For residents, the value is greatest when these partnerships produce tangible benefits that improve daily life and strengthen access to essential services.
The recognition given to MANTRA further reflects the importance attached to the contribution. During the initiative, NHIF Ruvuma Region presented the company with a certificate of recognition, acknowledging its community contribution and sponsorship of health insurance for the 1,000 students.
The recognition also underscores the value of cooperation between the Fund and private-sector partners in extending insurance coverage. For NHIF, partnerships with employers and organisations can complement public efforts by mobilising additional support for groups that need protection.
For companies, responsible community investment can strengthen relationships with surrounding populations while supporting national development priorities.
The student sponsorship provides an example. Hansi also commended the NHIF Director General for his efforts to ensure that Tanzanians are reached with NHIF services, particularly in implementing the Government’s Universal Health Insurance agenda.
He said expanding coverage requires strong public awareness, effective registration and continued cooperation among institutions.
The Fund’s role is not only to register members but also help people understand the value of insurance and use available services when they need care. In this context, partnerships such as the one with MANTRA can demonstrate how private contributions can support public goals and produce direct benefits for communities.
The student coverage is therefore. For the 1,000 students, the immediate benefit is access to medical care when needed. The wider significance lies in what that access can make possible: regular school attendance, greater concentration, reduced anxiety and stronger preparation for adulthood.

For families, insurance can provide protection against unexpected treatment costs. For the community, healthy and educated young people represent a stronger foundation for social and economic progress.
For businesses, supporting such initiatives can demonstrate responsible corporate citizenship and strengthen relationships with communities.
For government institutions, private sector participation can complement public programmes and help extend services to more people.
The initiative thus connects. Health, education, community responsibility and national development come together in one practical intervention.
MANTRA’s support can be seen as a reminder that community investment is most meaningful when it responds to practical needs and helps people participate fully in social and economic life.
By securing insurance for 1,000 students, the company has supported access to healthcare while helping protect families from medical costs that can disrupt education.
NHIF’s partnership has provided the institutional framework for that support. The recognition certificate presented to MANTRA acknowledges this contribution and encourages continued cooperation. Broadly, the initiative shows how business support can complement public goals.
